Children of George SMITH m 1823 Mary FLOWER
All the children of George SMITH and Mary FLOWER left their home village but only two stayed close by. The eldest son James SMITH married Ann CANNARD in 1848 at Litton, about 5m SW of Pensford, and left her a widow and seven children when he died aged 36 in a work accident in Bristol. Elder daughter Sarah SMITH married James HARDWELL in Bristol in 1852 and produced twelve children at Bedminster, ten of whom reached adulthood. Five children went further west across the Severn estuary seeking work in coal mining areas of south-east Wales. The second son Henry was first married in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire and again as a young widower in 1853 at Woolos, Monmouthshire. He had as many as thirteen children mainly in Machen, Monmouthshire, which became Glamorganshire. Henry worked as a coal miner and later as a contractor. It seems that he died in Pensford, Somerset, England in 1892 but his widow Amy died in Provo, Utah in 1913. Henry was joined in Wales by his younger sister Mary Ann, who married in the same church at Woolos in 1852, and Jesse who also married in this church in 1861. Then came Alfred, the second youngest, who married a Welsh girl Amy HARRIS in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1861. Their first four children were born in Glamorganshire but they were in Prussia for the birth of their 5th child in 1870. When they returned to England Alfred became a bank keeper at Cambois Colliery at Blythe, Northumberland, where they they saw out their days. Their sons John b 1870 and Alfred born 1872 emigrated to the USA. The youngest child John married Blanch THOMAS in 1862 at Machen, Monmouthshire. (Several family records show Monmouthshire was sometimes administered as part of England.) This couple had seven children born at Machen, Monmouthshire, where John made the transition from collier to farmer. Their eldest son William (1863-1930) is thought to have emigrated to Australia. The third son George was the first to leave Britain, emigrating to Australia with his wife and baby daughter on the Priam which sailed from Plymouth on 21 May 1852 bound for Portland Bay in the Colony of Victoria. This was a shipload of agricultural labourers who took the opportunity of an assisted passage in return for a 12 month contract to work on the Western District sheep stations, but George soon joined the goldrush to Ballarat where he had plenty of work as a carter. Seven of their ten children survived infancy. Their son George SMITH born 1868 and his wife Hannah GASKIN moved from Ballarat to South Australia about 1898. Mary Ann with her husband George COMER and five children left Wales in 1865 for Pennsylvania. They later joined Jesse, his wife Mary Ann PRICE and baby son, who had emigrated to America on 30 Apr 1866, on the John Bright from Liverpool, on the three-month 'Henry Chipman Company' trek from Nebraska to Utah. They settled at Lehi about 30 miles S of Salt Lake City, headquarters of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
