Eldest daughter Emily HARDWELL when aged 19, living at Prospect Cottage, West Street, Bedminster, Bristol, wrote a letter dated 8 Sep 1876 to her Uncle George and Aunt Melinda in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. It contained news of the family.
Children are scattered abroad except my Mother, she has 10 of us living well and hearty thank God. Father is still working in the same place - that is 24 years on the 26th of October. They are as happy as the day is long, far happier than many with no children. They have been living in the same house ever since they have been married which is 26 years last Whitsuntide. My 2 oldest brothers are married. The oldest William is a guard on the line. He has 2 boys. The other Henry is the same as you, a Carter. I am the next. There are 3 boys before the next girl. Alfred, the next to me, is a butcher. George is working at a shipbuilders. Walter is working at a large wholesale warehouse. My next sister is Sarah, next is Albert and Mary Ann and the last is James. The other two was dead born. I hope now mother has quite finished. We are altogether and as happy a family as any in the world.
