Captain Thorne's medals were donated to the Museum in 1972 by his grand daughter of Mrs. Willis of Scotby near Carlisle.
Her mother Gertrude Mary Thorne was a daughter of Capt Thorne from his second marriage. She was born 1 May 1887 at Galway, Connemara, Ireland, died 21 Feb 1965 aged 77 yrs at Carlisle, Cumbria, England. Gertie married 'Jack' John Mason (c1885-1961) in 1907 at Carlisle. From the cemetery records their address in 1961-65 was Rose Cottage, Scotby. They had four chn, all girls: Nora, Edna d 1974, Gertie m Gordon WILLIS, Joyce.

The watch was received by the buyer on 5 Feb 2009. He has not replied to messages from Andrea that we would like to purchase the watch. August 2010 it finally came into our possession. |
