His father George THORNE had recently been discharged from the British Army on 31 October 1877. It is thought that George gave the watch to his son William as a coming-of-age and/or wedding present. George THORNE died early the following year and his son William would treasure this watch for the next 60 years until his death in 1937. It has been kept in good working order and has the original key.
