William THORNE died 8 Dec 1937 aged 81 yrs at 43 Petteril Street, Carlisle, Captain (2nd Border Regiment) Retired. Informant was J MASON, Son-in-law, in attendance, of 43 Petteril Street, Carlisle [Registration District of Carlisle, Sub-district of Carlisle, County of Carlisle R/N 146, PAS811240/2/2000] bur Carlisle Cemetery, Dalton Road [Ward 9 Section L No 336]

"Since the last issue of the News Sheet, the Association, and the Carlisle Branch in particular, has suffered a grevious loss in the death of Capt W P Thorne, who passed away last December (1937) at the age of 81. Captain Thorne enlisted in 1870 and retired as Captain and Quartermaster. He was a staunch supporter of the Branch, and to within a few weeks of his death, attended all our Whist Drives." To William Thorne
By virtue of the Authority to me, by the Queen's Most Excellent
Majesty in this behalf given. I do hereby Constitute and Appoint you the said
William Thorne to be Sergeant Major in the
Border Regiment from the 24th of July 1889 and to
continue in the said Office during the pleasure of the Right Honourable the Secretary
of State for War. You are therefore carefully and diligently to discharge you Duty
as such by doing and performing all manner of things thereunto belonging as required by
the Established Regulations of the Service, and you are to observe and follow such Orders
and Directions as you shall receive from your Commanding, or any other, your superior
Officer, according to the Rules and Discipline of War.
Given under my Hand and Seal at the War Office this Second day of September 1889
