James GODDARD WHITE m 1871 Georgina SMITH
2. Georgina SMITH b 7 Feb 1853 Portland District of Victoria d/o of George SMITH and Melinda ANDREWS, chr 27 Feb 1853 by Minister of the United Church of England and Ireland, Division: Melbourne. (Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages began in Victoria on 1st of July 1853.)

Georgina HANSEN died 20 Nov 1922 aged 69 yrs, Widow, District Hospital of Maryborough, Usual Residence: Clarendon Street, Maryborough d/o George SMITH, Brick Carter and Melinda SMITH ms ANDREWS. Informant was George WHITE, son, present at death. Georgina's first marriage was at Ballarat aged 18 yrs to James WHITE, 2nd marriage at Daisy Hill aged 65 yrs to John HANSEN [Vic 13719] bur 21 Nov 1922 Maryborough Cemetery C of E.

Georgina SMITH m1. 1871 James GODDARD WHITE. According to a family story James GODDARD became James GODDARD WHITE by changing his name by deed poll at the time of his marriage. Apparently Georgina refused to marry him under the name GODDARD which was the surname of his stepfather. The father of James was James WHITE Snr who died in London when James was only 18 months old.

1871 Marriage Certificate in the District of Ballarat
Georgeina Smith, Spinster, Birthplace: Portland, Victoria, Age 18, Present and Usual Address: Ballarat, Father: George Smith, Carter, Mother: Melinda Smith ms Andrews, was married 18 Apr 1871 by licence according to the forms of the Congregational body by John Halley, an Independent Minister at the house of Mrs James Goddard (in Rowe Street) Ballarat East, James Goddard White, Bachelor, Birthplace: London, England, Brickmaker, Age 22 yrs, Present and Usual Address: Ballarat, Father: James White, Miner, Mother: Maria White ms King. A cross-wise written annotation by the minister says that: This marriage was solemnized after obtaining the written consent of the father of the bride. Both signed in the presence of Josiah Rice and Timothy Smith who also signed. [R/N 82, Vic 2127]

Notes:
1. Both witnesses were fellow brickmakers at the brickyard of Josiah RICE Snr on the cnr of Rowe Street and Seymour Crescent, Ballarat East. Timothy was most likely the son of John SMITH who was also a brickmaker of Rowe Street. It would seem that Georgina's father George SMITH whose occupation was Carter was also associated with the brickyard but as far as we know he was not related to John SMITH. It was just a very common name.
2. This certificate shows an initialled correction to the name of the father of the groom from James GODDARD to James WHITE. The occupation recorded next to these names is Miner, which I think should apply to James GODDARD and not to James WHITE Snr who died in London in 1851. His occupation in 1851 British Census was Bricklayer.
3. The name of the mother of the groom is not entirely correct. Maria is recorded as Maria WHITE ms KING but she was in fact Maria GODDARD having married James GODDARD in London in Oct 1851.

James WHITE (later GODDARD WHITE) b 1849 Somertown, London, England s/o James WHITE/Maria KING. [FreeBMD, Mar Qtr 1849 District of Marylebone Vol 1 Page 26]
James came to Australia as a 3 yr old child in 1852 with his mother Maria and his stepfather James (recorded as John on the passenger list) GODDARD aboard the Victory [Assisted Immigration to Victoria Bk 6 Pg 149]

1886 Death in the District of Maryborough
James WHITE, Brickmaker, died 20 Sep 1886 aged 38 yrs Maryborough [Vic 9785] Informant was Georgina WHITE, Wife. James WHITE was born Somerton, London, England s/o James WHITE, Sailor and Maria WHITE formerly KING, 34 yrs in Victoria, married at Ballarat, aged 22 yrs, to Georgina SMITH, bur 21 Sep 1886 Maryborough Cemetery [Grave No 1415] The occupation of Sailor for James WHITE Snr would seem to be an error as on other documents he was a Bricklayer.
