Jesse SMITH is shown in the 1841 Census, age 4, living with his parents at Mill Barton, Parish of St Thomas in Pensford. In the 1851 Census the family was living in Pensford Street in the village and Jesse, age 11, was a scholar. By the time of the 1861 Census Jesse had joined his Smith cousins in south-east Wales in the coal mining town Bedwelty in the Sirhowy Valley.

Athaliah was married in 1848 at Bedwelty to Henry SMITH (1826-1892) s/o George SMITH/Mary FLOWER.

Note: Risca is a parish and village in the valley between lofty Twyn Barlwyn and the Machen mountains, on the Monmouthshire canal, 6 and 1/2 miles NWW from Newport according to Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire, 1901, which states that Cross Keys is a mile NW and Pontywain is 1 and 1/2 miles N of Risca.
