[When Memory Turns the Key : The History of the Shire of Romsey, (1992), Ed. John Reid] The local newspaper, the Lancefield Chronicle was first published in 1868.

Susan Russell (1869-1903) and her mother Sarah Russell (c1836-1891, ms Coe) outside the Russell hotel in Ballarat abt 1890. Name and location not known but the street lamp is distinctive, like those in Lydiard Street. In the 1896-97 Sands & McDougall's Ballarat Directory on page 152 there is a Postal Guide with a list of 'letter receiving pillars' for Ballarat West and Ballarat East. As there is a pillar box shown in the photo this might help with identification of the corner.
Above the door is written S. RUSSELL, Licensed Victuallers. Signs in the windows say Billiards.
