Leslie Burke was born in Victoria in 1919. He signed up in 1937. While in the Navy he enjoyed amateur boxing. Served first on HMAS Canberra and then on HMAS Sydney II where he saw action on the Mediterranean. To give an idea of the ferocity of the actions they lived through, when back home on leave he mentioned that young midshipmen had gone mad with fear and had to be restrained and locked up for their own safety and the safety of the rest of the crew.
On his last visit home he presented a young first cousin with a pair of ladies brown leather gloves. She kept and treasured them since and only recently gave them to one of her own granddaughters for safekeeping.
That same granddaughter is currently a Petty Officer specialising in the field of electronics. The tradition of service in the RAN is still very much alive in this family.
(Story by Graham Martin 2010)
