Views of Forest Hill, Creswick, Victoria
The original Hutchins farm was located in present day Archibalds Road to the east of Forest Hill in the Parish of Springhill in the District of Creswick. It was a large parish and local names developed for smaller settlements such as Kingston and Newlyn which were part of the parish.
In I Give You Kingston 1838-1883, May Lawrence Townsend writes that Forest Hill was the highest hill of that type to have vegetation. Although fairly bare now it was covered with eucaplypt trees whose trunks spanned a circumference of 6-8 ft and not a single hollow one among them. The mammeloid green hills stand as sentinels on either side of the road at the south end of Kingston, one being Forest Hill and the other Spring Mount. The latter was firstly called 'The Brothers', then Spring Hill and now Spring Mount. There is a spring at the bottom of the hill.
The undulating volcanic landscape was first described by Major Mitchell in 1838 as 'mammalian hills'. Note the rich red fertile soil. This with an ample supply of good groundwater made the land very productive for the food producing farmers.
