According to the family Carrie made three voyages to England in an unsuccessful attempt to recover an inheritance from the BARKLA family in England. However, Carrie and her husband Alexander, a broker, lived comfortably with a large home in St Kilda Road, Melbourne and a beach house on the seafront at Sorrento. They employed the WALKERs as live-in help, he as chauffeur of their black Daimler, and she as book keeper. The whole Commons family were listed as passengers on the ship Northumberland which sailed from Melbourne on the 20 Jun 1877 bound for London.

Inward Passengers to Victoria 1879
In February 1879 Elizabeth Jane Commons and her children arrived back in Victoria on board the Somersetshire without her husband and with the addition of a son born in Cornwall.
