VX47985 Pte John Thomas GILES Born 18 Oct 1919 Donald, enlisted in the Australian Infantry Force in the 2/23 Battalion on 26 Jul 1940 at Caulfield, Victoria, Age: 20 yrs 9 mths, 6 ft, Occ: Labourer, Single, Presbyterian, Residence: Donald, NOK (Father) Mr James Giles, Walker Street, Donald.
Transferred to the 2/24 Battalion and embarked on 16 Nov 1940 for overseas service in the Middle East. Reported missing in action on 7 May 1941, on 26 Jun 1941 now believed prisoner of war, officially confirmed on 20 Sep 1941. He was interned at Camp Denna 9 Sep 1941; Camp Capua, Italy, 14 Nov 1941; Camp Grupiagnano, Italy, 27 Dec 1941.
Recovered POW and safe in Allied Hands 18 May 1945; arrived in UK, ex-Western Europe 28 May 1945.
Embarked from England on 23 Jul 1945, disembarked at Sydney, NSW.
