WW1 2675 Dvr Percy Leopold SPARK born Allendale, Victoria, enlisted in the Australian Infantry Force in the 6th Battalion, 22 Mar 1915 at Colac, Victoria. On his Attestation papers his occupation was given as Labourer. He had served 6 mths with the 20th Light Horse and was still serving. Percy stated that both his parents were dead and that the whereabouts of his uncle, his NOK J HANBY, were not known. Description from Medical Examination at Broadmeadows: Age 20 yrs 8 mths, Height 5 ft 4½ ins, Weight 140 lbs, Complexion dark (suntanned), Eyes brown, Hair dark, Distinctive Marks none, Religious Denomination C of E.
Driver P L SPARK embarked 26 Aug 1915 from Melbourne aboard HMAT A68 Anchises, still aged 20, with the 6th Battalion, 8th Reinforcements. He arrived at Lemnos as a driver in the Gallipoli campaign from 31 Oct 1915 until he disembarked at Alexandria in Egypt on 7 Jan 1916. On the 30 Mar 1916 he disembarked at Marseilles to enter the battlefield in France. Active service was interspersed with extensive periods of leave in hospital including a stay with influenza at Bath War Hospital in England in August of 1918.
He embarked for Australia on 2 Mar 1919 aboard the Derbyshire which arrived in Melbourne on 22 Apr 1919. He was discharged on 14 Jun 1919 as medically unfit. It was his sister who had been advised on the 17 Mar 1919 of his RTA.
Percy Leopold SPARK married Margaret QUINN in 1920 and they had two children, John Francis who died of meningitis at 3 yrs of age in 1925, and a daughter Doreen Mary born the same year. In Oct 1925 his address was 53 Market Street, South Melbourne on a letter regarding an application for a War Service Homes grant from the State Saving Bank of Victoria.
Percy died on the 18th of May 1950 at the early age of 56. He had battled with ill health in his war years.
The War Service Record of Percy Leopold SPARK contains an application from his widow, Margaret SPARK of 16 Collier Street, Preston, dated 19 Jul 1967, for the new Gallipoli Medallion medal. Her signature was witnessed by D M QUINN, her daughter Doreen Mary QUINN (ms SPARK).
The 1914/14 Star No 4768, British War Medal No 17539, Victory Medal No 17423 had been issued to him on 21 Mar 1924. [Australian War Memorial Nominal and Embarkation rolls, National Archives of Australia Service Record with barcode 8087950, 20 pages]
