Henry George SMITH (known as Harry) was born 15 Jul 1855 Ballarat, Victoria, the eldest son of George SMITH and Melinda ANDREWS [Vic 7472] Henry George SMITH died 30 Apr 1926 aged 71 yrs, 611 Havelock Street, Ballarat s/o George SMITH/Melinda ANDERSON (error, should be ANDREWS) [Vic 8320] Henry George SMITH age 71, Carter, Res. 611 Havelock Street, Ballarat, bur 1 May 1926 Ballarat New Cemetery [Presbyterian Block B, Section 3, Grave 16] This was the 2nd burial in this grave. The first was an infant brother of Henry George, John Aubrey SMITH, age 11 wks, Havelock Street, Ballarat, bur 31 Oct 1899. Eliza SMITH purchased this grave on 16 May 1927, a year after her husband died. Hers was the next burial in 1936, followed by their maiden daughters Lydia Frances SMITH in 1954 and Irene Grace in 1959. So this single grave contains the remains of 4 adults and 1 child. Obituary of Henry George SMITH Ballarat Courier Monday 3rd May 1926 The funeral of the late Henry George Smith took place on Saturday from his residence, 611 Havelock street, to the New Cemetery. There was a large attendance of citizens, including members of the Junior Imperial Football Club. The late Mr Smith was a native of Ballarat, and well and favorably known as a man of honesty and purpose. He leaves a widow and family of eight (four sons and four daughters). The services at the house and grave were conducted by Mr C S Benoit, who spoke feelingly of his knowledge of the deceased. The coffin bearers were Messrs A E Smith, A B Smith, C W Smith, and Mr H G Smith (sons of deceased), L Hendy (grandson), and W Swaine, accompanied by numerous relatives and friends of the family. Messrs F W Barnes and Son had charge of the funeral arrangements.
