William and Elizabeth SCOWN and three children (William Hooper, Edwin Graham and Emma) arrived in South Australia on 19 Sep 1839 aboard the Recovery as assisted passengers [App 3588, Emb 2680] They lived in Adelaide for eighteen years and moved to Victoria in 1857.

Mary Jane AXFORD b 1837 Bideford, Devon, England d/o Richard AXFORD/Elizabeth. This family applied for free passage to South Australia and arrived in Adelaide on 28 Jan 1840 aboard the Java [App 3885, Emb 3517] Richard Axford and one of the children died on the voyage. Elizabeth was left destitute and was entirely supported by the Department of Emigration. "Being a respectable woman, she (Elizabeth) is occasionally employed in nursing and washing to enable her to procure clothing for her family." Elizabeth AXFORD re-married on 1 Jan 1843, George DAY, a watchmaker.
