Enquiry from Kathy Gleich 9 Aug 2009: I am trying to trace my grandfather, James Alexander ROBINS, whose birth does not seem to have been recorded although he states that he was born in Sydney in 1876. I have this information from his Boer War records and his marriage certificate. On his first enlistment papers for the Boer War he has noted as NOK a P LARKIN (who may have been a cousin) and an S ROBINS . On his second enlistment papers in 1902 he states his NOK as Annie ROBINS . I have been unable to find either of these Robins people nor the P LARKIN. Grandad's mother is listed on his marriage certificate as Mary LARKIN and his father as James ROBINS, butcher. To date I have hit only brick walls. Also I think my grandfather was put into a home at the age of 9 yrs as it states that his mother was deceased and his father had deserted. The dates for the entry in the Randwick Asylum are right for his age etc. and his stepsister who signed him in was Mrs Alice G TAGGATT, 469 Pitt Street, Sydney. That was on 16 Oct 1885. He was released from there as an apprentice to Mr Henry BARNS of Casino on 15 Dec 1888 at age 12 years.
Any information would be most welcome.
