Service Number 17161 Sapper John ROWE bp Creswick enlisted in the Australian Army on 1 Jul 1916 in Adelaide, South Australia, Occ. Postal Assistant, NOK Mother Mary ROWE, Creswick, Victoria, had previously been rejected as unfit at Mt Gambier (toe problem), Embarked 31 Jan 1917 from Melbourne on HMAT A25 Anglo-Egyptian aged 23 yrs 5 mos, with 1st Signal Squadron Engineers, Special Reinforcements, Disembarked Suez 3 Mar 1917. In Egypt Spr John Rowe undertook a course of training at Central Corps, Moascar with the Australian Wireless 20th Corps and 4th Mounted Division. Other places mentioned in his service record are Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, Kantara, Abbassia, Montazah, Jerusalem and in the 'Field'. He was in and out of hospital with debility, dysentry, malaria, chronic conjunctivitis and septic sores, but was discharged to duty many times before being repatriated to Australia. Returned to Australia on HT Dunluce Castle with quinsy (tonsillitis), embarked 17 Jul 1919 Suez, disembarked Adelaide 13 Aug 1919.
