Arthur Edward RICHARDS m1. Zillah Ethel Elizabeth DAWE, Sep Qtr 1919 Eton, Buckinghamshire, England [FreeBMD Vol/Pg 3a/2526] This marriage ended in divorce. In 1940 Zillah married Samuel Leonard HUNTER. They died childless, he in 1948 and she in 1974. This may have affected Arthur's relationships with his family back in Australia.
Arthur Edward RICHARDS was a schoolteacher in Victoria before signing up in 1915 with the AIF and subsequently fought at Gallipoli and the Somme before learning to fly with the Australian Flying Corps in 1918. He was discharged as a Captain and returned to Australia where he taught for several years at Collingwood School in Melbourne. He came back to England under a teacher exchange scheme with the London Council and never again returned home to Australia.
When I was a child, he used to talk about being brought up in the goldfields and about life in the bush; also about how his mother (Clara) had died when he was young and he didn't get on with his stepmother. His father had died while he was away at war and when in the UK he subsequently lost touch with his family.
I have been trying to discover some links to my Australian heritage, which has become increasingly important to me as I get older (I am 67); my daughter moved to Sydney last year and is also keen to explore her historical associations with the country.
I'm not sure how tenuous our family link is but would welcome any guidance or advice on discovering my father's lost family and my own distant relatives.
