It is not easy to imagine how a family of eleven children, two of whom died in infancy, were raised in this small dwelling. However, from the front the size is deceptive because the verandah is so low. This would have kept out the harsh western sun. On the left was the kitchen with a large open fireplace and hooks for the various pots. The next chimney in the rear was in the living room which looked out on a cleared area and into the distance over the treelike of the native forest and to the rising sun. This room is packed with original furniture and I couldn't help but notice a large wooden trunk which very well may have been brought out on the ship with William Walter's belongings. The back door from this room would have needed several steps as the land sloped away. The two rooms on the right would have been for sleeping, maybe the larger one for the older children and the smaller one off the kitchen for the parents and the smallest children. At either end of the verandah are water tanks and laundry troughs. Around the corner with a separate entrance is another room which may have been used as a sleepout. To the right, the black doorway is the entrance to the dairy, a separate small building where butter was churned. It was probably used as a pantry too. Various old iron relics are to be found in the surrounds. It would seem that everyone came to the house to eat and sleep but generally life for the children was lived outdoors. There are many old shady trees and an orchard. A vegetable garden would have been an important source of food. And of course the ubiquitous gold mine was not far away. This line drawing is from the brochure produced for the reunion of the GUY family, descendants of William Walter and Isabella GUY held on Sunday 26th January 1992 at the 'The Reef', the property in Guy's Road at Staffordshire Reef which is owned by the FRAZER family, descendants of Marion Isabella GUY and Albert Lovat FRAZER. They have dedicated themselves to the conservation of the cottage and invited descendants to another picnic gathering on Sunday the 26th of February 2012. They deserve our congratulations for taking the trouble to keep the tangible memorabilia of our original goldrush immigrant in good order - no easy task. © Created : 24 April 2003 © Last Modified : 23 June 2023 Email : juniperballarat@gmail.com URL : http://juniperballarat.net/public_html/gen/guy/guy_hoc2.html |
