Thomas RICHARDS born Ballarat East 1871; educated Eureka-st State School; apprentice boot trade 1884, and during the ensuing 28 years worked for only two employers; appointed boot examiner Federal Defence Department 1915; became actively interested in trades union movement about 1890; president Ballarat Bootmakers' Union 1895; represented Union on Trades & Labour Council, and at various conferences for 20 years; attended first conference for federation of unions, which was not consummated till later years; one of the founders of political labor movement in Ballarat; member first committee and later vice-president of Ballarat West P.L.C.; later president Ballarat East Electoral Council; appointed Labor Organiser for Ballarat Federal Election 1913, contested Ballarat West seat 1914.
