Views of Crookston area, Midlothian, Scotland
Images by Iain Jamieson taken in autumn 2007.
Soutra-Aisle, a medieval Monks Hospital a few miles along the road from Crookston House. Iain has said that our Burrell ancestors certainly would have passed it on their travels.
Crookston Old House and farm, perhaps the home of the Crookston land owner, located a few hundred yards up the road on the B6368 to Gilston after taking the turn a short distance north of Crookston.
Left: The entrance to Crookston Old House. Right: Crookston Mill on the A7 road just north of Stow, Midlothian. The sign says Crookston Mill and the name is on the gate pillars as well. It is likely that Laurence Burrell was a mill worker or a mill estate worker at least from the time of his marriage in 1776 to Agnes GARNER until 1789 when the fourth child was born. Their son James BURRELL (1782-1860) and his wife Margaret SWANSTON (1785-<1872) were both born in Heriot-By-Crookston.
