Tasmania map  James CLOVER - Convict VDL
bar

A flurry of collaborative research instigated by Ross Newcombe's discovery of a Tasmanian convict by the name of James CLOVER has established that he who died in the Mooroopna Hospital, Victoria, Australia, in 1881 aged 62 years, husband of Bridget (formerly HOCKEY, nee BARFOOT) and father of at least seven children, was born as James GLADWIN in Writtle, Essex, England. He was tried once under this name and again in 1838 as James CLOVER for which he was transported as a convict to Van Diemen's Land in 1841. According to his death certificate James married Bridget in 1851 and we know that by 1854 they were on the goldfields of Central Victoria for the birth of a daughter.

Trial of James CLOVER 1838
James CLOVER late of the Parish of Burnham, Labourer, Tried for housebreaking after previous conviction for belongings, the cause of John GLADDON. Pleads Guilty. Sentence: To be transported for the term of 10 years to such place as Her Majesty shall think fit to declare. [Essex Quarter Sessions Indictments 16 Oct 1838: Dengie 32:, Wendy Taylor]
