William John Barfoot having sworn this 26th day of October 1874 states
Deceased was my mother. I have not lived with her. Six months ago I spent three weeks with her. She liked occasionally to complain of pain in her left side. She had sometimes a kind of smothering on her chest - She had been ill three years ago under Dr Carstairs, which she informed me of by letter, as I was there in New South Wales, & that Dr Carstairs told her it would always stick to her, I am not aware of her having had any medical aid of late - I saw her at a distance on Friday going into Mrs Gordons. I called down to her yesterday week, the door was closed & fastened. I called twice that day. I was informed that she was away & on the Saturday last I was detained from going to see her by the rain. In the mean time a person called to say that she was dead -

I have know the deceased during the last twelve months, since I came to live next door to her. She has always been complaining of pain in her side, after scrubbing the floor which she liked to do for me. She would flush very much in her face - She complained of difficulty of breathing and after chopping wood she felt a choking & suffocating - about 12 months ago she had a severe attack of choking & difficulty of breathing. I gave her some brandy & she came around. On Friday evening last I went in to see her. She was better then than she had been during the week, which she attributed to a severe dose of salts which weakened her. On Saturday morning I went to see her, I didn't go in. In the afternoon I went in with a neighbour and I found her dead in her bed, she could not scrub for me last week as she complained of a light feeling in her head - I never saw her the worse of drink - although people speak of her in that way.

This Deponent Mary on her oath saith, I am the wife of Joseph Highet residing at Gerturde St. Kildare I have known the deceased a good many years. She had a severe illness two or three years ago and was attended by Dr Carstairs, ever since she has complained of a pain in her side - I have heard her say that she could not work, that it upset her to do so - I saw her on Friday night last at my own place - She left bidding me good night. She left between 9 & 10.00 - She took a cup of coffee but ate nothing. She seemed nice & strong - she was rather stout - I cannot say which side the pain was in.

page 9 Newport Pincott Surgeon being sworn this 26th day of October 1874 states I have heard the evidence given in this case & I have examined the body of the deceased Mrs Barfoot now lying in her bed in her cottage Virginia St, the remains are that of a woman advanced beyond middle age & very corpulent. Her body is not decomposed, nor are there any marks of violence, face & neck are much engorged with blood & a quantity of froth effusing from her nostrils, the symptoms detailed in witness with reference to the chest, namely pain in left side, difficulty of breathing & suffocation are indicative of heart disease. Her congestion of face & neck indicate determinations of blood to head, any obstruction to the blood through her heart would cause this, and I am of opinion that the immediate cause of death was congestive apoplexy probably resulting from disease of heart.
