Isabella ROSS now 34 yrs of age was born near Yea, father a Farmer at Cluny, Victoria. Joseph WATSON now 38 yrs of age, born at Kirkoswald, County of Cumberland, England. Four children living of the marriage namely, Joseph Alfred Watson 11 yrs, Herbert Watson 9, Ada Isabella Watson 6, and Ralph Stanley Watson 4 yrs, all born at the Petitioner's residence at Lauriston.
It was claimed that on or about 9 Jan 1879 Isabella left her husband to live with John Barfoot from whom she had been receiving letters clandestinely. Two letters in Isabella's handwriting to her lover were in the case files. According to her husband there had been no domestic disturbance of any kind and no cause other than her attachments to the co-respondent (who would have been abt 26 yrs of age at the time).

It was stated on the death certificate of John BARFOOT in 1920 that he was aged 25 when he married Isabella ROSS at Castlemaine, Victoria, but no record has been found. There was no mention on his death certificate of his first marriage in 1874 to Bertha A A HEINE. In 1879 when the Watson divorce case was heard John BARFOOT would still have been legally married to Bertha but he had obviously deserted her. When Bertha re-married in 1885 she claimed falsely that she was widowed in 1876.

Andrew Barfoot has found by DNA testing in 2015 that his line of paternity is WATSON and not BARFOOT. So his grandfather George Henry was in fact the seventh and youngest child of this family, although he was raised by John BARFOOT and Isabella after she was divorced from her husband.
